A PERSONAL ATLAS · 2023—2026

A world
in view.

It began with a drone at home in Shanghai.
One place, one photograph, one step further.

Further from home.
Closer to the world.

A selection of photographs across landscapes, cities and the spaces between. Explore by place, then open a photograph to see where it was made.

Locations use embedded GPS where available. Regional locations are explicitly marked. Connecting lines are chapter links, not travel routes.

2026 · 7 MIN 25 SEC · CHINESE / ENGLISH

On a ten-day Arctic expedition, a routine after landing became the starting point of this film: cleaning our boots. From that small action, the camera turns toward a larger question—how do we understand our own presence in the landscape?

THREE OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FILM

What the camera sees.
What it leaves open.

Film still: boots being cleaned after an Arctic landing01 / 02:18

Start with an action

The film follows the cleaning and disinfection of landing boots, turning a routine into a concrete subject of observation.

Film still: the ship’s wake on Arctic water02 / 04:46

Ask what is missing

The voyage also depends on energy. The film distinguishes what its images record from what would require fuel-use data and long-term observations.

Film still: a Zodiac boat and visitors in front of a glacier03 / 06:50

Keep the boat in frame

A boat changes the image of a glacier. Keeping it in the frame makes the visitors’ presence part of the landscape, too.

The cold wind in the fjord is what I remember most.

THE DISTANCE WE KEEP

At eighteen, I came to Svalbard with a camera.

Animals and glaciers can seem to tell the whole story—if we keep ourselves outside the frame.

We travel by ship, then by Zodiac, and step ashore.

After every landing, we had to clean and disinfect our boots.

Why clean our boots after leaving the land?

Brushing the soles.

Then stepping into the disinfectant bath.

Footwear and equipment can carry seeds, microorganisms and other organisms.

Material attached to our gear may travel to the next landing site.

Cleaning and disinfection aim to interrupt this route of transfer.

The footage confirms that cleaning took place, not that the soles are free of organisms.

What travels on our soles may be invisible. The routine does not treat “unseen” as “absent”.

But the ship that brought us here also needs energy to travel.

Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide.

Cleaning boots reduces biological transfer; it does not offset the voyage’s climate impact.

Cleaning is visible to the camera. Fuel use and emissions are not fully visible in a landscape.

Yet this floating ice is not evidence of melting caused by this particular ship.

判断航次排放,要追踪燃料等数据;

Voyage emissions require fuel and other data; glacier change requires long-term observations.

The available material has no voyage fuel-use data. Answering further requires information from the operator.

The boots suggest a wider lesson: unseen does not mean absent. That includes impacts outside the camera’s view.

Crop out the boat, and the glacier can appear untouched by our presence.

Keep it in, and our own presence becomes part of the picture.

The drone was my starting point. These short excerpts preserve another way of looking: moving through a landscape, rather than holding a single moment.

I started as a kid flying a drone at home in Shanghai. Photography became a way to take that curiosity further.

I am an AP student graduating in June 2027, interested in environmental science and human geography. This portfolio brings together the places I have photographed and the experiences that have widened my perspective.

2024

Brown Environmental Leadership Lab, Eastern Sierras — water quality, alkalinity and soil observations.

2025

School trip to Tibet — visiting Pumotsongri Glacier and learning about the cultivation of Chinese and Tibetan medicinal plants.

2025

ASDAN programme in northern Tanzania, beginning and ending in Arusha.

2026
